Rafael Nadal will return on the tour on 31 December at the Brisbane ATP250. Until then, we have to sit and wait…
The last match played by the ‘Manacor Bull’ was also in Australia. Except, it was in Melbourne at that time. He lost in straight sets (6/4 6/4 7/5) against Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. With a hip injury that occurred at the beginning of the second set, the battle was hard to enjoy.
The meaning of this injury was tangible the next day. In a press conference, Rafael Nadal confessed to being “mentally destroyed” by this new obstacle. He gave himself a long break away from the tour. The months passed by, and his fans only had one thought in mind: “Is he going to miss the French Open?” He did. As he wasn’t physically ready in June, Rafa had no choice but to skip the most important tournament of his career.
After disappointment, comes worry. Is Rafael Nadal going to play another official match in his career? At 37 years old, exhausted by all these years of playing explosive tennis, nothing was sure. Rafa knew it and didn’t want to promise anything. He gave time to his spirit and his body to recover.
From October 4, the man with the 22 Grand Slam titles gave hints allowing his fans to hope for his comeback. He posted several videos of him training on the Rafa Nadal Academy’s courts. Each time a new Instagram post appeared; tennis lovers hoped for an official announcement. Our wish came true on November 16.
Coming back is good, but is winning better? Maybe not this time. Rafael Nadal has nothing left to prove. Having an honorable end to his career is everything we can wish for him. He said it all: “I think I don’t deserve to end like this. I believe I have worked hard all my sports life so that my end is not here at a press conference”.
Winning a 93rd title, and even more a 23rd Grand Slam seem to be mission impossible. But isn’t Rafa the best to defy all odds? Clinching a second Australian Open while he was 6/2 7/6 3/2 [0-40] down, winning a 14th title in Paris despite having an anesthetized foot or even reaching the 2017 final in Melbourne after having to cut short his 2016 season due to injuries. Toni’s nephew got us used to achieving the impossible. This last comeback might be the greatest challenge of his career.
No matter the outcome, we’ll enjoy every second of the last season of one of the greatest of the sport. Dreaming is still possible!
